GobLab UAI was one of the winners of the “Institutional Support Program” funds awarded by the Government Laboratory, which coordinates a Network of Public Innovators, composed by officials from all branches of the State interested in the innovation.

“This fund is relevant because it is delivered by the public body that articulates innovation in the State, where 71 organizations applied and selected only 21 projects. In addition, this gives it great visibility and expands the link with the University environment with the public sector, ”says María Paz Hermosilla, director of GobLab UAI.

The ceremony of signing agreements of the Institutional Support Program was attended by the sub secretary of Economy, Alejandra Dagnino and made visible the initiatives that the Government Laboratory will support with co-financing. In addition, it gave the opportunity for representatives of the various initiatives to meet and generate possible collaborations.

The fund delivered, will allow GobLab UAI to organize a series of activities to disseminate the international experiences of using Big Data and data science to solve public problems and analyze their projections in the Chilean public sector.

Within his program is the visit of Rayid Ghani, Director of the Center for Data Science and Public Policy of the University of Chicago and Chief Scientist of Obama in 2012, during the last week of October this year. “It is an honor to visit the UAI for its experience and dedication to the application of data analysis for the common good. He works on issues of citizen security, public health, urban deterioration and education, and he will be able to share experiences that are of great interest for different areas of public policies, ”says the director of the innovation laboratory of the UAI.

Other activities that will be carried out at the eaves of this fund are: the “Big Data: Creating Public Value” Seminar (Santiago), the “Opportunities and Challenges of the use of Big Data in the public sector” (Viña del Mar) Conference, in addition to meetings with public service leaders in Santiago and with parliamentarians in Valparaíso.

The purpose of this activities will be to sensitize the leaders of public and parliamentary services to the potential of Big Data to contribute to the process of modernization of the State. For María Paz Hermosilla, these meetings will allow their interlocutors to “prioritize resources for the development of this type of initiatives in the public sector, which are very useful when seeking greater efficiency and effectiveness in public management”.

Currently, the GobLab UAI is composed by Álvaro Bellolio (Research Director), María Paz Hermosilla (Lab Director), Andrés Letelier (Associate Researcher), Carolina Apablaza (Big Data Diploma Coordinator for Public Policies) and Nuri Carredano (Master’s Thesis in Economy and Public Policies of the UAI). “In addition, we are establishing collaborations in research and projects with other professors of the School of Government of the UAI and others, such as Journalism and Engineering. We hope to continue growing as a lab while we add projects, ”concludes Hermosilla.
