Given the high interest in the research of public policies of its professors, the School of Government of the Adolfo Ibáñez University create Gob Lab UAI, pioneer in the use of Big Data in public policies in Chile, with the purpose of improve the quality of life of people through the transformation of the public sector.
“Through government advice, research and postgraduate training for public officials and members of civil society, Gob Lab UAI seeks to contribute to the effectiveness and efficiency of the State”, said María Paz Hermosilla, Director of the Center and Master in Public Administration from New York University (NYU) in the United States.
This public innovation lab aims to contribute to the community through three main areas: research, teaching and applied projects. “We want to propose solutions to the large amount of information that is generated in the Government and that is not always used to generate public value or solve problems. The challenge that is generated is not only to have information, but how information becomes central in the way of working and dynamically complex solving ”, says the expert.
Currently, the Gob Lab UAI team, whose Research Director is Álvaro Bellolio, Civil Engineer from the Pontificia Universidad Católica and Master in Public Policy from the University of Chicago, is already working on two investigations in conjunction with Central Government public agencies on how Big Data is being used to improve audit works.
It is also being carried out a project with a municipality to create crime prevention models. “In the second semester we will bring an international expert in Big Data and Public Policies for a seminar in conjunction with the Chilean public services”, says the Director.
To contribute from the academy to the transformation of the public sector, in August of this year, the Diploma in Big Data for Public Policies will begin to be issued, focused on professionals from the public sector, civil society and the media. This program, which has expert teachers on the subject, will teach methodologies and data analysis tools that will allow innovating in the design and management of projects and public policies.
To release this diploma, the Gob Lab UAI will hold a free workshop on Thursday, June 22, entitled “Data analysis for public challenges” where its research director Álvaro Bellolio will review the importance of Big Data at a social level.
